Well guys I found myself in the same position this morning as Topaz and her mom. Driving into work this morning I came across a cat that had been knocked by a car and left for dead.

I stopped and put her in the back of my car. She was clearly in shock with blood all over and from a quick look she had a broken jaw. I took her to the nearest Vet which was 5 minutes down the road only to find that they were closed (it was 7am after all) and their emergency number goes to a fax. I wondered if I should fax them the cat.

I called Jason to find me another vet in town and lo and behold the next Vet had no Vet’s on duty and they had to come all the way from Stellenbosch to Cape Town. They would only be there at 08:30am. I had no way of knowing that the little ginger ball laying in the back of my car would make it as she was gurgling on her own blood.

Finally I called my own Vet (an hour away) and they said to bring her in right away. I rushed back home and heard the first meow as I pulled into the Vet. I had never been as happy as I was to hear that meow. They had me bring her in, wrapped in a towel and gave her the once over. No chip and no collar so we have no idea who her owners are. There I had not one, but two vets hovering over her.

It seems she has no other broken bones that we could see without x-rays, but her jaw would require surgery to repair. They stabilised her and told me that if her owner is not found they will probably be putting her down. She is a beautiful ginger cat and is in great condition. My heart just could not stand the thought of having her put down because an owner wasn't around to cover the costs.

I have had them put Emma (that’s what I’m calling her for now) on my account. They won’t be charging normal Vet rates, but as it is the bill may come up to R 4000.00 for her surgery. Guys I really need your help. I cannot afford R4000.00 to help Emma and as of right now am not even sure I’ll be able to give her a home, but if any of you can contribute a R50.00 or so towards her care I would really appreciate it. I am not sure exactly how much the bill will be just yet as I am waiting on the Vet to call me with his complete diagnoses of Emma. She is at Fourways Vet in Sun Valley if anybody is interested.

I would post some photos of her, but I doubt you would want to see the condition she was in when I found her. Perhaps once she is better I can post some photos.

If you are willing to help me please let me know and I will pm my bank details for the deposit.

Hectic!

Wow kitty, I'm really glad that you are one of the VERY few people who would stop to look and see if they can help a run-over animal. :notworth: My own cat was run-over on our road a few years ago and when I was leaving that morning he was in the middle of the road with a broken neck....it was terrible!

Unfortunately I live in Jo'burg but I have a few friends in Cape Town (Stellenbosh) so I'll get in contact with them to see whether they would want her. And I'd be happy to help donate :)

Thank you so much guys. I'm just waiting to hear from the Vet about the exact amount and what the next steps are in the process. As soon as I know exactly what is going to happen I will let all those who have contacted me know.

If we don't find her owner and nobody wants her by the time she needs to leave the Vet, Jason and I will try to take her on during her recovery period. After that she will have to find a new home though.

Hey Ben

I really don't mind. Any help is appreciated and once again I just really want to say thanks to all those who have offered to help.

I have received so many pm's and emails, I'm quite afraid I might lose track of who I've responded to. If I haven't supplied you with my account details yet, here they are.

Could you please use Emma as reference.

I will still advise all of you how much the exact cost will be, but until then at least you have the account info.

Hi there!

I'm Amz from the Parenting site Ben mentioned. ;) You did a great thing and I really wish that there were more of your kind around. I'll add my contribution too.

My cat was also run over when she was only 7 weeks old (a few years ago). We spent R3500 on her recovery and she had to learn to walk again. But she is the most gorgeous thing ever and fully recovered now.

As far as I know you don't have to register to read the topics Ben, just to view images. I'll ask Jason though.

Thanks so much Amz. You guys have no idea how much I appreciate this. Brings tears to my eyes to know people are willing to help an animal in need.

Hi

I just tested this as a Guest and you can indeed see all the forums without having to register.

In fact, you can even see avatars and signatures as guests which is something they have switched off on their site :P

Just from me. I would like to also thank everybody who has offered/agreed to contribute. It makes a rather stressful and sad episode a little bit more manageable. :)

Just an update on Emma. She is currently in surgery, which means they believe she will be fine. They have said all is going very well, but still no idea of the costs yet.

As good Vets they are more concerned with getting her better than the cost involved.

Wade - I have no idea what the swift code would be. I thought that was only for business purposes. I'll try to find out for you though.

Edit: FIRNZAJJ - that is FNB's swift code Wade. Is that the one you need?

Okay so here is the final result.

Emma broke her jaw in two places. The Vet has repaired it with two pins and an acrylic bridge. They have also put in a bag to feed her without her having to use her mouth.

She will in worst cases have to stay there for 10 days, but they won't be charging me for that. The Vet has said he will only charge me for materials and they have set the amount at R 2000.00. He said normally it would've cost R 6 000.00 but they understand the circumstances.

I will be going round tonight to see how Emma is doing and take some photos. So far I've received R100.00 to aid her.

Thanks guys. :)

As Jason noted, we have added photo's of Emma taken last night. She was still so groggy when I got there and clearly very uncomfortable.

Her mouth is very swollen and she looks pretty much like someone who has had plastic surgery done. She can't close her mouth just yet, but I'm sure once the swelling goes down it will all be better. The Vet has given her a very good prognosis, but reminded me that the first 24 to 48 hours will tell whether she is going to make it. I'll be calling them this morning to find out how she is doing and making a turn over the weekend to give her a brush.

As for Emma's funds...I am absolutely overwhelmed with the response I have received in the last 24 hours. I have received R800.00 so far with somebody (bless you) depositing a whopping R500.00!

I will be taking photo's of Emma on a regular basis and updating you all as she progresses through her recovery. Once again I can only say thank you and I know if Emma could say thank you she would too. Hopefully I'll be able to get a purr out of her soon. :)
