On may 2006 disaster struck, I switched it on only to be greeted by a pink blur on the LCD and the viewfinder. I was on holiday at that stage and thought I will try and sort this out with Minolta when I get back home. I got home and Contacted Minolta South Africa (and various other camera repair shops), and was told that Minolta sold/merged their Digicam section with Sony in Apr 2006.
I thought there was not much hope of Sony fixing my 5 year old Minolta camera. I phoned Sony South Africa and they gave the contact details of their Service partners (JED Distributors). I contacted them and took the camera in for a quote on repairing it. I was a little dis hearted because after some research i found the CCD for sale on the net for $499.
After about two months they called me and said that the camera could not be fixed as the CCD reached end of life a while back, but they also told me that the faulty CCD was a factory fault and they would replace my camera with a equivalent Sony model free of charge.
I was very happy at that and thought at least I would get a decent replacement (one of the cybershot jobbies) as my Minolta was seriously aged in Digital terms. But they surprised me and yesterday I got the Sony Alpha A100K, which is a stunning camera (highly recommended on dpreview). Attached is some pics of my new baby.
