Wikipedia launches iPhone application

Wikipedia said it has released an iPhone application as part of a drive to open the pages of its revered online encyclopedia to the booming ranks of smart phone users.

Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization behind Wikipedia, made free software for iPhones available at Apples online App Store.

"Everybody recognizes with the growth of mobile tools globally that this is how people access information," foundation spokesman Jay Walsh told AFP on Wednesday.

"Our mission is to spread free knowledge; we want to do everything we can to meet and embrace that audience."

Wikimedia foundation is a small operation with a staff of fewer than 30 people, so it contracted a US developer that was already working on Wikipedia software for Apple's coveted iPhones.

Playstation 3 Slim Confirmed, Coming in September

On the eve of the inaugural edition of gamescom, Europe's largest gaming conference, Kazuo Hirai, chairman and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, unveiled the hotly anticipated, slimmed-down version of its PlayStation3 console, to the excited gasps of the geek-heavy crowd.

Sony will roll out the slick, black and slimmer PS3 worldwide in September. The hope is that the console, about a third smaller and lighter than the current PS3, will help boost key holiday sales.

Sony also used gamescom to announce the European rollout of its PlayStation Network. Starting in November, customers in the U.K., France, Germany and Spain will be able to buy or rent movies from the online service to watch on their PlayStation consoles or PlayStation Portable devices. The service will offer films from the major U.S. studios as well as local players such as Germany's Universum and Constantin Film.

EVE Online maker unveils Dust 512

CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Petursson on Tuesday took the wraps off Dust 514, a forthcoming console game based on the company’s popular massively multiplayer online (MMO) title EVE Online. Dust 514 is described as “a hybrid MMO/FPS” (First Person Shooter that will interact with EVE Online itself. Petursson made his remarks during a keynote address at the Game Developers Conference in Cologne, Germany.

EVE Online, playable on both Mac OS X and Windows, is set in outer space, envisioning a future on the far end of the Universe where mankind has populated a galaxy after being cut off from its homeworld. Players occupy starships as they fly from system to system, carrying cargo, refining materials, mining, pirating, engaging in player vs. player combat, playing a constantly evolving market — the choices are almost endless.

The MMO differs from other popular games like World of Warcraft in a few respects. One is its single server design — all players share one common place to play, rather than being fragmented onto server “shards.” Another is the storyline of the game, which is largely dictated by what players do. EVE Online makes a strong emphasis on player-led “corporations” — the equivalent of a guild — whose actions provoke what’s happening in the game.

Bing Gains Market Share on Google and Yahoo

Microsoft Corp.'s souped-up Internet search engine gained a little more ground on industry leaders Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc. in July, according to data released late Monday.

Despite the progress, Microsoft's search engine still remains a distant third in the United States — the main reason that the world's largest software maker plans to team up with Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo next year.

By working together in online search, Microsoft and Yahoo are betting that they can pose a more serious threat to Google in the most lucrative part of the Internet advertising market.

Microsoft's search engine — renamed Bing as part of a June overhaul — ended July with a 8.9 percent share in the United States, up from 8.4 percent in the previous month, according to comScore Inc. Just before Bing's debut, Microsoft's search market share stood at 8 percent.
